JESSICA RAINE TAKES HER ACTING TO A NEW LEVEL IN BIG BBC DRAMA

See Jessica Raine as you have never seen her before in her new BBC Drama

Jessica Raine’s role as a drunk, sex-crazed army wife is set to shock to viewers who remember her as squeaky clean nurse Jenny Lee from Call the Midwife .

In The Last Post, out in the Autumn, she plays Alison Laithwaite who feels confined and frustrated by her life in 1965 Aden (Yemen).

Writer Peter Moffat – who based the series on his childhood experiences of life on a Military Police unit – says it is great for Raine to return to the Beebas a different character.

“I think Jessica’s having a wonderful time playing that character,” he tells us. “It’s different for her, new for her, fresh for her. It’s good for people to see her acting ability stretched and pushed and… not in a bonnet.

The first episode, set at the fag end of the British empire, shows Alison saying goodbye to her lover, her husband’s superior officer, after one last romp.

nlike prim and proper Jenny, Alison has smudged make-up, slurs her words, and is almost always wearing a flimsy dressing gown and negligee and clutching a glass of wine or gin. Her hand language is so fruity, she inadvertantly teaches the commanding officer’s young son to use the f-word. At one point he tells his mother – played by Amanada Drew – that she smells “f***ing beautiful”.

Director Jonny Campbell says that the actor was not allowed to say the f-word because he was just eight. “We have to come up with some innovative ways of being able to edit together later. In this instance we got him to say fun and king.”

Whatever would Sister Julienne say?
